Double glazed sash windows.

The photograph here shows one of 3 double glazed sash windows I recently made and installed at a property in Brighton.

The timber sash windows are each draft-proofed and double glazed (with 24mm k-glass glazing units). They have been finished with a traditional style architrave and primed ready to paint. Note: snow and sub-zero temperatures don’t help much when fitting windows, get in touch now to arrange installations for spring/summer 2011. Another new timber sash window

The window pictured here is now ready to glaze and install. It is to replace a window at a Victorian property in Brighton. The original has suffered from rot and had been damaged by ivy. This photo shows the window glazed and installed:

Double glazing and draft-proofing

The photograph here shows some double glazed sashes I have been working on for a property in Brighton.

I have glazed them with 14mm low-e sealed units. Thermal efficiency in windows is calculated as a U-value, with single-glazed windows having as value of around 5.6. Many different types of glazing unit are available each with its own U-value. As these sashes are to be installed into the original Victorian frames at the property, slim units (14mm) are used in this case. This reduces the U-value to around 3.0, and along with the draught-proofing system, will make a marked improvement to the drafty victorian sashes and offer some degree of sound insulation.

Also, this week I was asked to replace some broken window glass and fit mirror film to the windows. I had not worked with this material before and had been warned it was a tricky job to do, here’s a picture of the finished job:

Triple Box Sash Window

The photos below show a 3-in-one sash window I have been working on. The client asked for a double glazed sash window to match the original style of the windows in the neighbouring properties. The glazing bars and rails are machined slightly larger than traditional ones to accommodate the double glazed units. Low-e units and a draught-proofing system are used for improved thermal efficiency.

I will add further photographs once the window has been glazed and installed.

Georgian sash windows

I recently constructed and installed four Georgian style sash windows for a property in Brighton. Despite the fact that the house was a listed building, the original windows had been replaced with UPVC windows. The owners wished to have them restored to the traditional style . The photographs below show various stages of the construction with the final picture showing the completed windows installed at the rear of the property. Double Glazed Sash Windows

This week I have been working on sash windows again. I often get asked if it is possible to double-glaze existing sash windows. The answer is yes and no, it will depend on the style and condition of the window, and also on whether or not the property is listed etc. Building regulations also control what can and can’t be done. The sashes pictured here have been made to fit into existing frames and support double glazing. Additional lead weights are used to balance the extra weight of the glass.

Artist’s studio / Garden shed

I was asked to construct, install and glaze some very tall windows and a door for a garden studio. The client is a Brighton-based artist & designer who required extra space to enable him to work from home. The front wall of the studio is formed of five glazed frames each 10’2″ (3.1m) tall and is constructed from softwood using traditional joinery techniques. The following photographs show the work in progress…

Sash Window Workshop
